Every year as the holiday shopping season comes around, I am reminded of Rani Ban's social media post that starts "I love small business so much sometimes I cry when I talk about them."
As a child, I would ask my mom to take me to the Holiday Market held inside the Silverton Fire Department every year. (Well, at least for every year that we lived in Toms River). Small vendors would fill the space with their handmade goods - ornaments, holiday decor, toys, chocolates, and peanut brittle. I would browse the shop and get to meet the makers - an opportunity that felt so magical to me at that age, like getting a tour of Santa's workshop and meeting the elves. The vendors were always so friendly, they would tell me their processes and about their own children or grandchildren that I reminded them of. There was always holiday music playing, free hot cocoa at the door, and familiar faces.
As Wull & Oak enters into her 4th Holiday Season, I cannot help but cry a little when I see how she has evolved to carry this same spirit. Soulful music, friendly faces, and customers that feel more like family telling me about their lives. Watching the shop inspire others, the way small makers always inspired me. The warm feeling that small town communities provide - it's all alive in Wull & Oak.
